Almost 5 years after its debut on the market, the hybrid console of the Big N continues to grind successes: over 92 million Nintendo Switches have been distributed, and nothing suggests a possible drop in sales of the console in the immediate future, also thanks to the recent release of the OLED model.
Especially in the United States, the numbers continue to be very respectable, as revealed by Doug Bowser, president of Nintendo of America. In fact, in the course of October 2021, a total of 711,000 units were sold, of which 314,000 related to Nintendo Switch OLED. This allowed the platform of the Kyoto house to resume the first place in the hardware sales charts, after the momentary overtaking of PlayStation 5 which took place in September 2021.
“October this year is only 3% lower than the same period in 2020, which I think we can all agree on was an anomalous year when we think of overall hardware sales,” Bowser said of the pandemic. Covid-19, then continued: “We believe this is a solid start for the OLED model. And we also think it is an important indicator of what kind of commercial performance to expect during the Christmas period.”
Bowser also confirms the excellent performance of Metroid Dread, as already confirmed by the sales charts of NPD, which in the US sold a total of 854,000 copies during October: this makes it the best launch ever for the series. The president of NOA also confirms that new Switch buyers generally tend to catch up with the most popular and long-time games on the console first, such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing New Horizons, which is why they are always present in the top 10. in the international sales charts and have come to sell a total of 38 and 35 million copies respectively.
